Evitada: The Avoided Artwork is a contemporary art project by Spanish conceptual artist Josep Piñol that turns the decision to forgo producing a large-scale installation into a critical gesture in response to the logic of carbon markets. Through performance, documentation, and storytelling, this “non-work” questions how economic, symbolic, and climatic value is assigned both to what is done and to what is deliberately not done.

The talk proposes a dialogue between artistic practice and political ecology, highlighting the limits of greenwashing and raising questions about responsibility, offsetting, and narrative within the climate crisis—reconsidering what counts as climate action.

Josep Piñol (Tivenys, 1994) is a conceptual and performance artist whose work operates in the fissure between the art field and the institutions that legitimize it. Through mimicry and displacement, he intervenes from within to dismantle and reconfigure its languages, treating discomfort as a site of truth. Moving from scenographic installations, his practice has evolved from the documentary to the speculative, and from the biographical to structural critique. In EVITADA, he notarized his definitive renunciation of a monumental work: a certificate later acquired by a collector, which challenges the carbon-offset market. Since 2022 he has worked from his warehouse-studio in Tivenys and lives between Madrid, Barcelona, and the Ebro Delta. More info: https://www.joseppinol.com/bio-en
