As the Hostel closed in the 1990s, Prusha’s unique structure succumbed to neglect and disrepair for over two decades. Recognizing the potential and necessity for its survival, in 2009, Arun and Namita Saraf launched a restoration project to preserve Taragaon Hostel and transform it into a Museum – a documentation center to archive the unique translocal history of this space. Led by Natasha Mittal Saraf, the restoration team included Neils Gutschow and Thomas Schrom, and this project took over four years to complete. A dedicated team of architects, designers, and structural engineers addressed the complexity of resurrecting a derelict structure while simultaneously developing a contemporary syntax for new components. In 2014, led by the Saraf Foundation, Taragaon Museum opened doors to the public – a space that stays true to its original design and appearance.
